Looking for lovely dog-friendly hotels and cottages is getting easier, but last year we discovered Pets Pyjamas – our, now, go to travel advisers. Online but also on the phone they have helped us find getaways in the UK where Daisy is as much a valued guest as we are. They have special packages with the hotels and also offer pet travel kits for that added indulgence. Plus, there is a very tempting pet shop, for those easily tempted and welcoming community pages to share your stories.
Anyway, our brief this time was to the Lake District, somewhere new for a weekend away for May bank holiday. We were late booking (I am only just getting used to the baby-brain not being quite so efficient) and had a short-list but nothing was a problem.
Our hotel of choice was Another Place – The Lake, a newly refurbished hotel and offering on the shores of Ullswater. At the time they had an exclusive offer, for two adults and up to two dogs, dinner, bed and breakfast for two nights in a Dog-Friendly Better Room so we jumped at the chance. The options on rooms are Standard, Better and Best which all link to the views of the lake.
An easy drive up the M6, with a couple of comfort breaks for Daisy and myself we pulled into the sweeping driveway of Another Place, sun shining brightly and water sparkling. Parking was a simple affair outside the entrance and we disgorged slightly early to find some food.
Warmly welcomed, our room was ready but our bellies were grumbling so we headed straight to the terrace of The Living Space for some al fresco dining. This is the relaxed dining/lounging offering at the hotel, dog-friendly and with an open kitchen as well as the necessary views of the lake. It was bustling with family groups and friends out for the day as well as residents.
A hearty salad and a doorstep sandwich, with side of fries, later we tore ourselves away from the sunshine and checked-in to our room. Our room was in the new annexe with apex floor to ceiling glass and perfect ‘sitting and watching the world go by’ armchairs. And waiting for Daisy was her personalised PetsPyjamas travel kit complete with toys, treats, poo bags (just in case you forget) and other goodies.
As we expected the setting is what stole the show. On the banks of Ullswater the 18-arces of gardens offer formal walking with plenty of idyllic shady spots as well as fields and banks to explore. Perfect for roaming kids. Plus, they take their outdoor activities quite seriously at The Lake offering stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking onsite at the Sheep’s Shed along with kids activities galore. If its adventure you want then the Lake District is not going to disappoint from wild swimming to star-gazing and they will arrange it all for you.
If you’re recovering from your latest activity or you’re thing is more for relaxation then head to the Swim Club and float (precariously as I did with bump) or get your lengths in. There’s a shallow area for little ones, and an outdoor hot tub and sauna. There is also a treatment room for indulging even more, and most treatments are pregnancy friendly. Now it was simply a choice of what to have…
The Living Space is open for a relaxed lunch or dinner but there is also the non-dog-friendly (understandably so) Rampsbeck Restaurant which offers a three-course dinner menu inspired by the region’s produce. It is also where breakfast is served and you can attempt to make your own waffles… in case anyone is interested.
We didn’t really head too far with the heat and heffalump ankles, however Pooley Bridge is on the doorstep, with its walks and Ullswater Steamers, then there’s walks around historical Howtown, Aira Force Falls and Glenridding and Patterdale.
Our intention is to try Another Place when the latest member of our family arrives but we will be returning. It certainly felt like another place, the rooms, hospitality and service all gently complementing the scenery we already love. All that I needed now was a long gin and tonic… three months to go…
